Newcastle United will support the Premier League’s bid to implement new financial regulations - according to one football finance expert.

The announcement of recent commercial deals with sportswear giants Adidas, kit sponsors Sela and sleeve sponsors Noon have reportedly boosted the Magpies coffers by around £250m as they continue their battle with financial regulations that have hampered some of their efforts to add to Eddie Howe’s squad.

However, football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes may find some positivity in the new financial rules that are set to be implemented by the Premier League to bring them in line with the regulations put in place by UEFA in recent years, describing them as ‘the least worst option’ for the St James Park hierarchy.

He told Football Insider: “I think ambitious and aspirational clubs such as Newcastle United or Aston Villa will see the new financial rules as an opportunity.  It’s a chance for the club to increase revenue and on the back of that they can increase transfer spend.  Newcastle have signed deals with Adidas, Sela, Noon and also enhanced the club’s position in terms of commercial partners in the Middle East area.

“They’re fully aware that for every extra £100 that they generate they can add an extra £70 into their spending pot – or £85 if they’re not in Uefa competition.  So I suspect that Newcastle will have viewed these proposed changes as the least worst option.  Newcastle will want to be in Europe on a regular basis and will therefore have to comply with Uefa financial rules – so they might as well replicate them in the Premier League to have to deal with only one set of regulations.

Spanish outlet Fichajes have claimed the 20-year-old attacking midfielder is ‘the centre of attention’ from several clubs around Europe after boosting his reputation as one of European football’s most exciting talents after impressing in Ligue 1 throughout the season.

With three goals and five assists in 29 appearances in all competitions for Lyon and seven goals in his last eight appearances for France Under-21s, Cherki has captured the attention of a number of clubs.  Newcastle and Chelsea have reportedly sent recruitment staff to check on the youngster in recent months.  However, the report claims an asking price of ‘around €25m (£21.3m) has been established’ by Lyon as they look to make the most of one of their prized assets.
