Newcastle United transfer target Sven Botman has told the Dutch media he wants to play in ‘a nice competition’ as speculation over his future continues to gather pace.

The Lille centre-back was at the top of the Magpies list of priorities during the January transfer window but remained in France after the two clubs were unable to agree a fee for his services.

United turned their focus towards an ulimately successful pursuit of Brighton and Hove Albion defender Dan Burn, who went on to play a key role as Eddie Howe’s side surged away from the Premier League relegation zone to secure an 11th placed finish.

However, the interest in Botman remains alive and it is believed the Magpies will make yet another attempt to secure his services during the close-season.

Despite reports of interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, it is Serie A giants AC Milan that are also in the running for the 22-year-old.

There were reports that Milan had cooled their interest but Botman has revealed it remains alive.

He confirmed he has interest as the transfer window opens for business and explained that he has ‘a very good feeling’ about his future.

When asked of interest from Newcastle and Milan, he told Algemeen Dagblad: “Those clubs are interested, yes.

“I can’t and won’t say much more about it.

“What I want? Taking a nice step towards a nice competition. I am also looking forward to a new step.

“I am aware of what I want. That is not necessarily to that club or that competition. You weigh all kinds of things and then the total picture has to suit you. I must have a very good feeling about it.”

He also revealed his desire to get his next move completed in time to join his new club in time for their return to pre-season training.

“There are now talks. I won't go into all that, but it's going well. I do hope that the transfer for the new season is completed. Preferably also for the preparation, yes.”

With the likes of Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark expected to leave St James Park this summer, the Magpies are expected to bring in at least one centre-back to compliment Fabian Schar and January signing Burn.

There has been speculation over the future of captain Jamaal Lascelles after he was linked with a return to former club Nottingham Forest following their return to the Premier League.
