Newcastle United ‘hold talks’ with England international - Arsenal leading the race

Newcastle United have stepped up their pursuit of Everton striker Dominic Calvert Lewin.

Newcastle United have reportedly stepped up their interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin and have opened talks with the Everton striker, according to Football Insider.

Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries this season and has failed to prevent the Toffees from flirting with relegation, leading to rumours that he could be on his way out this summer.

The likes of Newcastle and Arsenal have both been heavily linked with the forward who will be eager to get his career back on track.

Calvert-Lewin scored over 30 goals in the Premier League in the previous two seasons and the Magpies clearly believe he could get back to his best if he moved to Tyneside.

Despite the Daily Mail claiming Everton have placed a £60 million price tag on Calvert-Lewin’s head, the Magpies are clearly unphased by the fee and have pressed ahead with their negotiations.

However, while Eddie Howe’s side appear to be further ahead in their pursuit of the England international, it is thought that he would still prefer a move to Arsenal.

While the Gunners are yet to secure a top four finish, they can guarantee Calvert-Lewin European football and regular action next season, with Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette likely to leave the club.

If Newcastle are to win the race for the 25-year-old then they may have to persuade him with a lucrative deal.

With Chris Wood’s struggle for goals this season, as well as Callum Wilson’s problem with injuries, Calvert-Lewin would be a great signing for the Magpies and they will be hoping they can tempt him into a move up north this summer.
