Newcastle United have reportedly held talks with RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai’s representatives with a view to launching an official bid.

The Magpies have sent scouts to watch the Hungarian international in action twice this month, where he scored in wins over Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich.

According to Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze, the Magpies are willing to meet Szoboszlai’s release clause, and wages “would not be a problem”.

The 22-year-old fuelled speculation linking him with Eddie Howe’s side after liking a social media post that said “Newcastle are ONE win away from Champions League qualification”.

Szoboszlai recently hinted at a potential exit when asked if he would stay at Leipzig.

“I didn’t say that,” he said. “We still have three games [remaining this season]. For those three games I’m definitely still at RB Leipzig. I want to play in the Champions League.”

Asked again a few days later, Szoboszlai joked “next question”.

Szoboszlai has scored nine goals in 45 appearances this season. Since moving to Leipzig in Red Bull Salzburg in 2021, the midfielder has played 90 times and netted 19 goals.

Hinze adds that a potential move for Szoboszlai will see Howe end his interest Leicester City star James Maddison.

The England international has been a top target for the Magpies head coach after having two bids rejected last summer.

Maddison is keen to leave Leicester following their relegation to the Championship but the Foxes are still believed to value the 26-year-old around the £50m mark.
