Eddie Howe and his team will be working tirelessly ahead of the January transfer window. There are plenty of ways that Newcastle United could bolster their squad at the midpoint of the Premier League season but who will they look to bring on board?

The Magpies are reported to be interested in a highly-rated box-to-box midfielder who currently plays in Serie A. They aren't alone, though - both Chelsea and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the player. Additionally, Newcastle are also in 'advanced talks' to snap up a player who plays for Manchester City.

Nicolo Barella has been one of world's football's most coveted stars for several years now. He is thought to be in the crosshairs of Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool right now, according to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes.

However, his current club, Inter Milan, appear to be aware of the interest he is generating. They do not want one of their key players to depart the San Siro in the middle of the season - as such, they have offered him a new contract that will last until 2028 to ward off any potential suitors. His current deal will expire in 2026.

Toon in 'advanced talks' to sign Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips has become a forgotten man at Manchester City after joining from Leeds United in 2022 for a £42million fee. City are now looking to move him on - and Newcastle are thought to be in 'advanced talks' to bring him to St. James' Park, according to TEAMtalk.

Newcastle currently lack a top-class defensive midfielder. If Phillips can find form for the Toon, he would be able to fulfil this role perfectly - and put his torrid time at the Etihad Stadium behind him.
