Newcastle United are “seeing improvements” from Allan Saint-Maximin as he continues his recovery from a hamstring issue.

As first reported by NewcastleWorld, the Frenchman was facing an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining his injury in the 5-1 win over West Ham United on April 5.

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe hoped to have Saint-Maximin back within a couple of weeks, however his absence has stretched into a fourth week.

After spending around a fortnight in France, the 25-year-old returned to the club’s Benton training ground last week and has taken part in individual sessions.

He wasn’t deemed fit enough to feature in wins against Everton and Southampton, and Howe did not confirm if he’d back in time for the visit of Arsenal to St James’ Park on Sunday.

“We’re seeing improvements from Maxi,” said Howe. “He’s been working with us now for a week, he’s been working hard with the physiotherapists.

“He’s still not with the sports scientists, there’s still a bit for him to do before he’s back training, but all positive signs.”

Prior to his injury, Saint-Maximin had started four consecutive games - his best run in the starting XI since August - and claimed back-to-back assists in victories over Manchester United and West Ham.

It has, however, largely been a frustrating campaign for the player, with an early season hamstring issue restricting him to 11 Premier League starts.
