Anthony Gordon will undergo a scan on Monday as Newcastle United sweat over the fitness of one of their key players.

The 23-year-old was part of the Magpies party that travelled to Chelsea on Sunday but wasn’t included in the matchday squad due to a groin issue.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has confirmed Gordon will be further assessed ahead of the Carabao Cup tie against the Blues on Wednesday night, which places doubt over his availability for them and Saturday’s league match at home to Arsenal.

“He felt his groin yesterday in training,” Howe explained. “We hope it’s not serious but he’ll go for a scan probably tomorrow.”

It was the first time United have been without the England international this campaign and he watched on from Stamford Bridge stands as his teammates succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.

Nicolas Jackson handed the Blues the lead in the 18th minute before Alexander Isak levelled. A mistake by Isak then led to the home side scoring a second immediately after the restart when Cole Palmer fired home.

That proved to be the winner as Howe’s winless run in the Premier League stretched to five matches. They sit 12th in table after nine games.

On the performance, Howe said: “I’d say the majority I liked. I thought it was a strong performance. Coming here, you know it’s going to be a very difficult game, especially when you concede relatively early in the match, a big moment for us in terms of our response, which I thought was really strong.

“We scored a great goal ourselves. We weren’t perfect in our performance, we lost the game but I thought it was another improvement and I feel the team is moving in the right direction, albeit we’re making a couple of mistakes that cost us today.”
