Newcastle United learn FA Cup quarter-final fate as last eight opponent revealed

Newcastle United reached the quarter-finals by beating Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night

Newcastle United have been drawn to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The all-Premier League tie will be played over the weekend of March 16, ensuring Newcastle's scheduled Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace has been postponed.

Eddie Howe's side reached the last eight of the competition on Tuesday night as they edged out Championship side Blackburn Rovers on penalties at Ewood Park. The Magpies drew the game 1-1 after seeing Anthony Gordon's 71st minute opener cancelled out by Sammie Szmodics and after a goalless extra-time period, Newcastle won 4-3 on penalties with Gordon scoring the decisive penalty in Lancashire.

Newcastle have also seen off Sunderland and Premier League rivals Fulham on the road to reach this point of the competition, ensuring they will not play at St James' Park in the FA Cup this season. This campaign is the first time since 2019-20 that Newcastle have progressed beyond the third round. They reached the quarter-finals that season, too, before being knocked out by Man City, of all teams.

Having dropped out of Europe and missed out on winning the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup appears to be Newcastle's last chance of winning a trophy this season and Howe will be desperate to secure some silverware. Newcastle will earn a further £450,000 in prize money should they progress to the next round by beating Pep Guardiola's side.

The full FA Cup quarter-final draw is:

Wolves or Brighton v Coventry City

Nottingham Forest or Manchester United v Liverpool or Southampton

Chelsea or Leeds United v Leicester City

Manchester City v Newcastle United
