Why Dean Huijsen is linked with Newcastle

United boss Eddie Howe is keen to bolster his defence having failed to do so last summer when a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi failed to materialise.

With Sven Botman viewed as the long-term option at left-side centre-back, Newcastle are targeting a replacement for Fabian Schar on the other side. The former Switzerland international is out of contract at the end of the campaign and although he is expected to sign a new deal, a younger replacement is being explored.

Schar turns 34 in December, while Emil Krafth Jamaal Lascelles’ deals are also due to expire this summer. Krafth is in talks over an extension but Lascelles’ future is uncertain as he completes his recovery from an ACL injury.
