The latest transfer updates from St James’ Park as Newcastle prepare for a busy summer transfer window

Newcastle United fans have experienced a very inconsistent, stop-start campaign in what has been a tricky second full season for Eddie Howe and his players.

In a nutshell, the overwhelming problem for the Toon has been injuries and ultimately Newcastle’s ability to cope during the absence of stars such as Joelinton, Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope, who have all succumbed to long-term injuries. Such issues and a lack of squad depth, has prevented the team from ever really going on a long-winning run as we saw last season, despite a number of memorable victories and displays in certain games.

The toll of European football has been a major factor, and with Europa League and Europa Conference football in the balance on the last day, Howe’s men could be involved in an extra eight games to coincide with their league and cup duties.

If they are to reach the heights of last season in the league, they are going to need squad depth, and according to reports from the Yorkshire Evening post, the Magpies have a ‘watchlist’ of three footballers from Leeds United in Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Illan Meslier as they bid to rectify the issue of squad depth.

The Leeds trio were all involved in last night’s 4-0 play-off semi-final triumph over Norwich City in a win that ensured Leeds’ place at the Championship play-off final at Wembley as they pushed for an immediate return to the promised land of the Premier League.

Reports claim Newcastle have been scouting Gray, Summerville and Meslier extensively this season ahead of a possible raid in the summer.

While reports from Mail Sport journalist Craig Hope add that the Whites will need to raise over £100m in player sales to meet the league’s Profit and Sustainability rules if the team fails to win promotion at Wembley Stadium.

Gray has been the breakout star in the division this term. The 18-year-old, who follows a long-line of Whites icons such as dad Andy, grandad Frank and uncle Eddie has played 46 times this season and has impressed at both right back and centre midfield.

The academy graduate is tipped to one day become an England international and his versatility could prove essential to a Newcastle team challenging on all fronts.

Meanwhile, Summerville who is reportedly valued at £30m has been awarded the Championship Player of the Season after firing in 20 goals in 45 appearances out wide. The 22-year-old is blessed with pace and trickey and could be brought in as a long-term replacement for Miguel Almiron, who remains the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia.

Finally, Meslier is a 24-year-old shot stopper with bags of Premier League experience already. The French U21 international is keen to play top-flight football and could provide competition for Nick Pope if Martin Dubravka is to leave St James’ Park in the summer.
