Alan Shearer took to social media to hail Sean Longstaff for his first-half double in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Southampton.

The Geordie midfielder picked the perfect time to score his first St James Park goal in four years when he collected a pass from Kieran Trippier before firing home at the Gallowgate End with just five minutes on the clock. Longstaff soon had the St James Park faithful in raptures once again when he doubled his tally after a sumptuous move down the left-hand side involving Joe Willock, Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.

The brace was equally as sweet for Longstaff after he wasted several opportunities to get on the score-sheet in over the last month and he revealed he had taken advice from Shearer on different aspects of his game over his time in United’s first-team.

So there should be no surprise the Magpies all-time record goalscorer took the Twitter to show his delight at Longstaff’s impressive double, much to the delight of other United supporters on the social media platform.

Shearer was not the only onlooker to show their delight over Longstaff’s double with members of his family - including his brother and fellow Magpies midfielder Matty - watching on from a box at St James Park.
