Newcastle United legend and former England captain Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to post a moving message in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

The monarch passed away on Thursday with the United Kingdom in mourning at the nation’s loss.

And Shearer has paid tribute to the Queen, and has spoken of his honour to have met and spent time with her.

Shearer tweeted: “The Queen dedicated her life to the service of this country. For a boy from Newcastle it was an honour to be in her presence. Thank you Ma’am. For everything.”

Shearer is the English Premier League’s record goalscorer with 260 goals and also holds the record for the most goals in black and white.

The Magpies’ match with West Ham United, scheduled for Sunday, has been cancelled, along with the other nine matches in the top flight this weekend as a mark of respect for the passing of the Queen.
