The United hierarchy are trying to persuade Manchester United and England midfielder Jesse Lingard to accept a move to St James Park - according to the Daily Mail.

The 29-year-old is in the final six months of his contract at Old Trafford and also has interest from Spurs and West Ham United.

However, Lingard is said to be “intrigued” by the switch to Tyneside and the Magpies remain hopeful a deal can be struck.

Spurs midfielder Dele Alli is said to be viewed as an alternative to Lingard.
