A former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig manager has been linked with a move to Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann - and one current Magpie could play a part in any attempt to appoint the German boss.

Although there has been little indication the St James Park hierarchy have been anything but supportive of current Magpies manager Eddie Howe, there has been some speculation over consideration being given to who would succeed the former Bournemouth boss should he leave the club in the near future.

Indeed, the Magpies manager has been routinely praised by the club’s owners, with co-owner Amanda Staveley crediting him for playing a part in ‘bringing the club back to life’ following his appointment in November 2021.

Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit just under a year ago, she said: "We were getting over being in a relegation position and having to bring the club back to life.  We had some incredible people with us day one, but we've had to build that team out well. We've had to bring in the marvellous Eddie Howe but when we first took over it was extraordinary because we didn't have a director of football, a chief executive or a commercial director.”

After overseeing a remarkable turnaround in fortunes in his first two years at Newcastle, Howe seems likely to be in the running to take over as England manager if Gareth Southgate steps down from the role when his current deal comes to a close following this summer’s European Championships in Germany.

Nagelsmann will also be on a touchline during the tournament as he looks to guide the hosts to their first European Championships win since they saw off the Czech Republic at the Euro 96 Finals that were held in England.  However, much like Southgate, Nagelsmann’s current deal comes to a close at the end of the summer and the former Bayern boss has been linked with succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool after he revealed he will step down as Reds manager this summer.

One recent report in Germany has suggested Newcastle are ‘interested’ in Nagelsmann and will provide competition for their Premier League rivals if there is a change in manager at St James Park.  Bild journalist Christian Falk has claimed Nagelsmann has not decided whether to extend his current contract with Germany or return to club management for the first time since he left Bayern just over 12 months ago.  Falk also reveals Magpies defender Fabian Schar is represented by the same agency as Nagelsmann.
