Newcastle United have reportedly been told they will have to pay over £60m if they want to sign Brighton and Hove Albion star Moises Caicedo.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been on World Cup duty with Ecuador and played in every minute of his side’s group stage fixtures against Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal. Caicedo scored in the latter of those games but was unable to help the La Tri progress into the knockout stages after they finish in third place in their group.

Caicedo has quickly become one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League after impressing with Brighton over the last year. After moving to the Seagulls in February 2021, he went on loan to Belgian club Beerschot but returned to the AMEX Stadium in January.

Caicedo featured in eight Premier League games before the end of the season and has continued to impress in 14 appearances during the current campaign. His form has attracted praise from a number of onlookers, with former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp describing him as ‘magnificent’.

He told Sky Sports: “He (Caicedo) had a spell in Belgium where he was very successful; they bought him back when they sold Bissouma to Tottenham. He has been magnificent. He possesses all the attributes to play really well in every area. He’s a brilliant tackler, the timing has to be spot on with the modern game.

“You get it wrong, you get booked, you’re on a knife edge for the rest of the game. But he makes tackling look so easy. I remember Scott Parker was a magnificent tackler, used to do this very well. He can also play, he’s very progressive with his passing, looks to play people in. He’s just been a revelation since he’s come there and I’m sure a lot of clubs will be looking at him right now. He also has an eye for goal, he gets forward.”

His form has attracted attention from the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle, with Magpies sporting director Dan Ashworth reportedly keen on a reunion with the midfielder. However, The Sun have now reported Brighton will demand a fee in excess of £60m to part company with one of their prized assets.
