Newcastle United are hoping to strengthen their wide attacking options this summer

Spain winger Nico Williams is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after attackers in world football after a series of impressive performances for Luis de la Fuente’s side on their route to the Euro 2024 final.

The 21-year-old has made five appearances in the tournament so far, scoring one goal and providing one assist. He has been a nightmare for opposing defenders throughout the competition due to his direct attacking runs and his ability to create chances by getting behind defence.

His performances have helped La Roja record impressive victories over the likes of Italy, Croatia, Albania, Georgia, Germany and most recently World Cup finalists France. This leaves Spain within one game of becoming European Champions for the first time since 2012.

Williams has been on Newcastle’s radar for a number of months, according to the Athletic's Chris Waugh, who claims that the 21-year-old is one of three main right winger options that is appearing regularly in Newcastle’s recruitment discussions alongside West Ham hero Jarrod Bowen and Leeds ace Crysencio Summerville.

Of all the names mentioned, Williams is the youngest option with the most international experience and despite his performances in Euro 2024, he could well prove to be the cheapest option after news emerged of an intriguing release clause within his contract at Athletic Bilbao. Williams, who helped the Red and Whites to an historic Copa Del Rey triumph last season, is under until the summer of 2027, but according to Spanish outlet Marca has a release clause within his contract that would allow him to leave for a figure of around €55m which equates to around £46.45m in pounds.

This would make the youngster considerably cheaper than Bowen, who West Ham value at around £100m after his impressive 16-goal season in the Premier League last term.

News of interest in Williams comes amid reports that Newcastle could consider selling Miguel Almiron to a Saudi Arabian side in the summer window. Al-Shabab had wanted to sign the Paraguayan in the January window for £30m but were rebuffed by the Magpies at the time due to their injury crisis. However, they remain undeterred by that setback and are expected to return to the table with a new offer for the 30-year-old.

Newcastle are one of a number of clubs that are thought to be interested in Williams and it is also suspected that the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea could emerge with interest.

Arne Slot’s side are in the market for a winger who could eventually become the long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, who faces an uncertain future heading into the last year of his contract. While Chelsea, after missing out on Michael Olise, are likely to turn their attention to a right sided attacker as new boss Enzo Marseca aims to assemble a team that can once again qualify for the Champions League after a two year absence.

Unlike Chelsea and Liverpool, Newcastle cannot offer the player European football after finishing seventh in the Premier League, but they are the most likely to offer the player first team minutes and the mouth-watering proposition of linking up with Alexander Isak after his 21-goal season last term.
