Newcastle United are set to bolster their backroom staff with the appointment of Liam Mason.

According to The Athletic, Mason will join Eddie Howe’s backroom team from Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Mason, a sports scientist, has been at Ewood Park since 2014 - holding the position of head of athletic performance.

But after eight years at Rovers, Mason’s exit is set to coincide with manager Tony Mowbray’s departure.

Howe has been keen to improve his backroom staff, recently poaching analyst Mark Leyland from Liverpool in December.

"Like all my staff, he’s had a big impact,” Howe said when asked about Leyland last week. “He’s played a huge part in what we’ve done this season.

“He’s one of a number of people behind the scenes that have put a tireless amount of work in to try and improve the team.

“We love him to bits. He’s been an integral part of our team."

Speaking about the importance of having a strong backroom team last month, Howe said: "We need to produce a higher level of everything right across the board for the players.

“We need to give them every tool that they need to produce their best performances on a consistent basis so whatever area of the club that is, whether it is analysis, food or sleep, we need to try and educate the players as best we can. You will only do that with the best staff.

“I don’t quite know what areas we will be looking to improve our product in but, certainly, that quest will never cease for me. It’s always about trying to help the players in any way that we can."
