The Magpies are one of a number of clubs thought to be keen on signing the France Under-21 international this summer and he is now in the final months of his current deal with the Ligue 1 giants.

With talks over a new contract failing to progress, Marseille president Pablo Longoria believes Kamara on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Speaking to The Express, he said: “I believe that, until the end, you have to have hope.

“There is no conflict with Boubacar Kamara. His commitment is unquestioned. I do not hide the fact that a club who developed a player is not in a comfortable situation when they could lose him.

“To tell the truth, the ending of a contract is a problem in today’s football. We have to think about how the industry works.

“Money that could have been passed between clubs before, now it’s in the pockets of agents and families. There are advantages to being a free player.”

Reports in Italy suggest Newcastle have “made contact” with Hellas Verona striker Giovanni Simeone.

The 26-year-old frontman has impressed after joining Verona on loan from Cagliari with 15 goals in 24 appearances.

His temporary employers have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season - and there have been suggestions they could look to make a quick profit on the striker if the take up that option.

A fee of around £21million has been quoted for Simeone.

Newcastle could face competition from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, who are managed by Simeone’s Dad, Diego.
