Championship club Swansea City are reportedly showing an interest in securing a loan deal for Newcastle United defender Harrison Ashby.

England star Kieran Trippier has firmly secured his place as Eddie Howe’s first choice on the right-hand side of his defence and the Magpies manager is able to call upon the services of Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth as backup options for the former Atletico Madrid full-back.

However, there have been some suggestions Manquillo is attracting interest from two La Liga clubs as the Spaniard as he enters the final 12 months of his current deal at St James Park. Krafth is slowly making his way back to fitness after a cruicate ligament injury suffered in a Carabao Cup win at Tranmere Rovers limited the Sweden international to just two appearances last season.

United’s interest in Southampton full-back Tino Livramento has been widely reported - although there have been suggestions the two clubs remain some distance apart in their valuation of the former Chelsea academy defender. However, the Magpies interest remains and that could open up the possibility of Ashby being allowed to take the next step in his development away from St James Park.

The 21-year-old joined the Magpies on the final day of the January transfer window and made two appearances for the club’s Under-21s before being an unused substitute as the Magpies first-team ended their campaign with draws against Leicester City and Chelsea.

Ashby was a second-half substitute in Saturday’s pre-season friendly win at Gateshead as he replaced Trippier just after the hour-mark - but he could make his next appearance in the colours of Championship club Swansea after WalesOnline revealed the Welsh side have the defender ‘very much on their radar’ and suggested they are expecting incoming deals ‘over the coming days’.
