Newcastle United meet 'unplayable' £50m target ahead of January transfer window

The Magpies are big admirers of the 25-year-old and his performance against them on Saturday afternoon will have undoubtedly caught the eye further.

Mbeumo opened the scoring just eight minutes in when he cut inside of Lewis Hall to fire the ball into the top right corner. Then, in stoppage time, the winger slipped in substitute Kevin Schade, who finished past Nick Pope.

“Bryan Mbeumo today [was] unplayable,” Frank told Match of the Day. “His goal is fantastic but look at his workrate, that’s unbelievable.

“But also the way he used his body and held up all the difficult balls so we could keep playing, for example, the assist at the end to Kevin Schade. Very impressed.”

Having bolstered the left-hand side of their attack by recruiting Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes for a combined £83million, the focus has switched to the opposite flank.

And Mbeumo has been identified as a ‘dream’ target for United. Liverpool too have been linked.

The Cameroonian has already scored nine Premier League goals this campaign, equalling his tally from the last two seasons. In total, he has 31 top-flight goals and 23 assists.

“I have spent five years at Brentford, at a club that has allowed me to grow and pass a milestone but yes, I would like to play in the biggest competitions, at the best clubs,” Mbeumo told L’Equipe in the summer. “It is tantalising to see some big clubs interested in me. We will see.”

But as ever with Newcastle, their spending is heavily restricted by Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Magpies’ boss Eddie Howe has already hinted at a quiet January.

It’s been reported that Mbeumo’s price tag is set between £50m to £60m.
