Newcastle United midfielder dealt blow as future up in the air amid new contract

Newcastle United midfielder Joe White’s short-term future is up in the air just two games into his season-long loan spell at MK Dons.

The 21-year-old joined the League Two side on deadline day and cited former Magpies defender Mike Williamson as a key factor behind the move.

“I'd spoken to the manager the day before, he told me how he saw me fitting into the team, and I knew how well he did at Gateshead, and started so well here, so it made me want to come down and play here,” said White.

“He sees that I can improve the squad, but I see myself, especially in this team, playing higher or as a 4. I did that at Crewe last season, so wherever I'm needed, my versatility will help the team.”

White made his debut in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to rivals AFC Wimbledon - who United play in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday - before appearing in the EFL Trophy tie away to Colchester United.

But less than 48 hours later, Williamson left his position to join Carlisle United. Crawley Town manager Scott Lindsey has emerged as the early favourite to take over.

White - and Newcastle - will be hoping the sudden managerial change doesn’t impact his chances of featuring regularly and with that impact his development.

The Carlisle-born midfielder signed a new contract at St James’ Park until 2027 prior to heading out on loan. He spent the first-half of last season at Crewe Alexandra before being recalled by United amid an injury crisis.

White made his Premier League debut as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw versus AFC Bournemouth. Further substitute appearances against ChelseaTottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace then followed.
