Newcastle United midfielder endures nightmare international debut - career at crossroads
Isaac Hayden tasted defeat on his maiden international bow as Jamaica lost 1-0 to the United States.
Penning a six-year extension just 12 months before the Saudi-backed takeover means the 29-year-old remains on Newcastle United’s books. Hayden was once a valued asset on Tyneside, helping the Magpies secure promotion under Rafa Benitez before establishing themselves in the Premier League.
However, the midfielder has not played for Eddie Howe since a 4-0 home defeat to Manchester City in December 2021. With two years left to run on his current deal, Hayden is surplus to requirements at St James’ Park but wages have repelled permanent interest.
Three loan moves have all failed, with Hayden also failing to land a move in the summer. A lack of first-team action did not stop former Toon boss Steve McClaren from calling him up for Jamaica.
The Reggae Boyz have adopted a policy of calling up eligible players with Premier League experience as they target 2026 World Cup qualification. Hayden, who represented England at youth level, was excited by the prospect of representing his father and grandparents going into the international break.
“I’m looking forward to both games, especially the home game,” he said. “I think playing on Jamaican soil in the first leg is important. The atmosphere will be cracking.
“The main thing for us is to go out there and make everyone proud. My dad was born in Jamaica and he moved from Jamaica to England when he was nine and both my grandparents from that side were born in Jamaica as well, so that’s a good line of heritage.
“It’s good to finally get it done and get it over the line. It’s been a long time coming and I’m just looking forward to it.”
But a 10-man Jamaica were edged out 1-0 by the USA over the weekend. Hayden came on at half-time and made little impact, picking up a booking before Demarai Gray’s penalty was denied to pull level.
