Lucas De Bolle is staying with Newcastle United’s under-21s after a shock move to Dutch champions Feyenoord fell through.

News broke of De Bolle’s potential exit to the Eredivisie on the eve of transfer deadline day, with sources in the Netherlands claiming negotiations were ongoing over a season-long loan deal that would see the midfielder link up with the club’s U21s.

Now the deadline has passed, supporters have been left wondering if the 20-year-old had indeed joined Feyenoord, and it’s NewcastleWorld’s understanding that a proposed move wasn’t finalised.

As a result, De Bolle will remain on Tyneside until January when his future will be revisited. The player’s current contract is due to expire at the end the campaign.

De Bolle, who was born in Scotland to a Belgian father and an English mother, joined the Magpies’ academy in 2015 but is yet to make a competitive first-team appearance, despite featuring on the bench and in friendlies on the odd occasion.

He spent last year on loan at Hamilton Academical and made 26 appearances but couldn’t prevent the Scottish outfit from being relegated into the third-tier.

The Magpies have already done business with Feyenoord during the summer in regards to Yankuba Minteh. United signed the Gambian winger from Danish side Odense Boldklub for £7million before immediately loaning him to the Rotterdam-based outfit.

Speaking about Minteh’s arrival, sporting director Dan Ashworth described Feyenoord as “a club that also has a strong development record of its own.”

Both clubs will compete in this season’s Champions League but were kept a part in last Thursday’s group stage.

Newcastle face Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan, while Feyenoord are in the same group as Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Celtic.
