Newcastle United are yet to make a ‘concrete’ move for Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney despite their ‘long-standing’ interest in the Scotland international.

The Magpies have already been active in the summer transfer window after completing the signings of Odense winger Yankuba Minteh and AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali. A third deal of the summer was confirmed on Sunday afternoon when a deal for Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes was officially concluded.

United manager Eddie Howe remains keen to further strengthen his squad in preparation for an exciting season at St James Park as the Magpies prepare to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2003.

A left-back is believed to be on the agenda despite the presence of the likes of Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett in Howe’s ranks. Newcastle have been consistently linked with a move for Gunners star Tierney since the end of last season as the former Celtic man has struggled to find a regular place in Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven.

Whether he can force his way into the Spaniard’s thinking will be integral in any decision over his future according to CBS journalist Ben Jacobs, who believes a potential move to Tyneside could be ‘one to watch’ as the window heads towards its final month.

He told GiveMeSport: “Kieran Tierney is one to watch as far as left-backs are concerned at Newcastle. There’s been a long-standing interest. Arsenal have to understand whether Tierney is happy with his diminished game-time and prepared to stay at the club or, alternatively, would like to go somewhere where he might be a starting left-back.

“Until the player decides, Newcastle won’t move in any kind of concrete sense. But there’s also a possibility that Tierney is available in the market. I would expect Newcastle to move for a left-back because there’s a starting spot potentially available even though Dan Burn is liked and popular at the football club.”
