Bye bye James Trafford - Newcastle United identify new No.1 goalkeeper target with £26m clause
Newcastle United are in the market for a new goalkeeper to challenge Ewen Jaouen for the No.1 jersey.
Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Sporting Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
It is no secret that the Magpies are in the market for a new shot-stopper this summer. Ewen Jaouen - the France under-21 goalkeeper - arrived earlier this summer.
However, Newcastle want to add a more experienced goalie to their ranks. Jaouen joined knowing he would serve as the understudy to a more established No.1 keeper.
James Trafford chase ends
As reported last week, Newcastle ended their race to sign Manchester City star James Trafford. Toon chiefs expressed interest in the England international for three consecutive summer windows.
His future was always set to be decided after the World Cup despite not playing a single minute at the tournament. After a brief enquiry following England’s exit, Newcastle decided not to pursue a move, with Leeds United now in the driving seat.
Newcastle United switch targets
The Daily Mail claims the Magpies are now weighing up a move for Braga goalkeeper Hornicek. Hull City tried - and failed - to sign the Czech international earlier in the window.
The 24-year-old made his senior debut for the national side after featuring throughout every youth level. Interestingly, Hornicek is understood to have a £25.6million release clause in his contract.
This aligns with Newcastle’s transfer strategy and the player - who snubbed Hull - would be more open to a move. Hornicek is described as a modern, sweeper-keeper goalie who can build attacks from the back.
As for Nick Pope, the club will listen to offers for the veteran as he enters the final year of his contract. The 34-year-old was once again found wanting for Gateshead’s goal at the weekend.
