Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi.

The Argentina international has been linked with a move to Tyneside on several occasions in the aftermath of the PIF-led consortium’s takeover of the Magpies in October last year.

Despite claims the United hierachy would target high-profile signings in order to build momentum at St James Park, a more astute approach has been taken with the likes of Aston Villa defender Matt Targett and England full-back Kieran Trippier proving to be integral in the improvement since the turn of the year.

The £35million handed over the French club Lyon for Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has proven to be the most sizable fee paid during their first ten months in charge at St James Park.

That has not stopped some eye-catching names being linked with a move to Tyneside and journalist Fabrizio Romano has now suggested the Magpies have been ‘offered’ the opportunity to sign former Inter Milan striker Icardi.

After spending time at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, the Rosario-born frontman joined Serie A club Sampdoria in July 2011 befor moving on to Inter in a £13million deal two years later.

Icardi scored 124 goals in 219 appearances at the San Siro before joinign Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long loan deal in September 2019, before making the move permanent 12 months later.

The 29-year-old has helped the Ligue 1 giants to two league titles, two Coupe de France final wins, a Coupe de la Ligue win and was an unused sub as PSG fell to a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final in 2020.

Icardi made just 14 starts in all competitions last season as he was forced to provide a back-up role to the likes of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

That has led PSG to offer his services to a number of possible suitors and journalist Romano has suggested Newcastle were one of the targeted clubs.

He told Caught Offside: “I’ve written about Mauro Icardi being offered to Manchester United, and also Arsenal earlier in the summer, though they preferred to sign Gabriel Jesus.

“I can now reveal that the Argentine also been offered to Newcastle.

“Icardi’s situation is really difficult. PSG want to find a solution soon, but the player does not intend to accept unwanted destinations.

“He has been offered to Manchester United and Newcastle who have not made any kind of proposal for Icardi so far.

“There are also Galatasaray emissaries who contacted Icardi’s camp this week.”

Newcastle are keen to add more attacking talent to their squad and have been linked with moves for the likes of Chelsea star Christian Pulisic and Watford forward Joao Pedro in recent days.
