Newcastle United player ratings as 8/10 star sends Chelsea star ‘into early retirement’
Newcastle United player ratings as Eddie Howe edge past Chelsea at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United remained third in the Premier League table following a 1-0 win over Chelsea. And with the World Cup coming up, Joe Willock’s only goal of the game ensured the Magpies will stay there until Boxing Day at least.
A moment of quality from Joe Willock broke the deadlock on 67 minutes before Eddie Howe’s men once again showed their fighting qualities to see out the victory. A seventh clean sheet of the campaign extended the club’s unbeaten run to 10 matches and earn their fifth straight win.
Newcastle fans are dreaming of European qualification, and who can blame them. United have 30 points already. For perspective, they didn’t reach that mark for 2021/22 until March 10 this year.
Here’s our writer Jordan Cronin’s player ratings from the 1-0 win over Chelsea:

1. Nick Pope - 8
At full stretch to deny Gallagher on 66 minutes. Outstanding save and a key one, as United took the lead a few minutes later. Kept his seventh clean sheet of the season.

2. Kieran Trippier - 8
Instrumental as ever down the right hand side. Created some of Newcastle’s best chances and defended superbly.

3. Fabian Schar - 7
Recovered from an early knock to the head. Read the game well with a number of vital interceptions.

4. Sven Botman - 8
Produced a goal-saving header at the backpost to prevent Broja from scoring in the first-half. Overall, a performance to show he was unfortunate to miss out on the Dutch World Cup squad.
