Sometimes in football, you don’t get what you deserve - and that was the case for Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Eddie Howe’s side, on a nine game Premier League unbeaten run, played against European champions Chelsea with no fear.
They frustrated the life out of the hosts with an excellent disciplined display but that was cruelly undone on 89 minutes as Kai Havertz broke the deadlock.
The fixture wasn’t without its refeering controversy either, with Kai Havertz perhaps lucky not to see red for an elbow on Dan Burn.
Jacob Murphy was then denied a penalty midway through the second-half after going down under a challenge from Trevoh Chalobah.
Here, our writer Jordan Cronin dishes out his Newcastle player ratings from the 1-0 defeat in West London:

5. Dan Burn - 6
Take nothing away from Burn, he’s been outstanding since he arrived from Brighton. But sadly, it was the Blyth-born defender at fault for Chelsea’s opener - completely losing sight of Havertz. | Getty Images

6. Matt Targett - 7
The Aston Villa loanee looked a little lost positionally, particularly in early stages of the first-half, after switching to left-wing back. Got much better as the game progressed, however, to put in another steady display. | Getty Images

7. Bruno Guimaraes - 8
Battled relentlessly with Kante in midfield. Was at the centre of a debatable referee decision when kicked in the head by Ziyech. | Getty Images

8. Sean Longstaff - 9
This was Longstaff’s first start since Watford in January and was United’s man of the match. Didn’t shy away from a tackle and was comfortable in possession. Formed a strong partnership with Bruno to grasp his opportunity. | Getty Images
