Newcastle United's struggles away from home continued as they lost 1-0 to Luton Town following Andros Townsend first-half goal.
Eddie Howe named three changes from Tuesday's Carabao Cup exit to Chelsea. Fabian Schar returned from injury with Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier recalled. Emil Krafth, Sven Botman and Tino Livramento dropped out.
Luton took the lead in the 26th minute when Alfie Doughty's corner was flicked on to the back post by Ross Barkley and headed home by former Magpies winger Andros Townsend.
Moments later, Barkley was inches away from doubling the home side's lead when he struck the crossbar before a low save from Martin Dubravka denied Elijah Adebayo.
Unimpressed by what he saw in the opening 37 minutes, Howe changed formation and brought on Alexander Isak as a No.10 in place of Lewis Miley. Jamaal Lascelles was also forced off through injury with Botman introduced.
Jacob Brown hit the crossbar for Luton again minutes into the second half but Newcastle gradually improved as Isak saw an equaliser ruled out for offside.
After that, the momentum again switched in the home side's favour. Howe's men rarely threatened as they lost on the orad in the Premier League for the fourth game on the spin.
