Newcastle United player ratings: 'Disastrous' 3/10 & 'careless' 5/10 as Chelsea win Carabao Cup tie

Newcastle United player ratings v Chelsea: A bad night for Kieran Trippier as Magpies lose 4-2 on penalties.

Newcastle United are out of the Carabao Cup after losing 4-2 to Chelsea on penalties. Eddie Howe's side were minutes away from advancing into the semi-final after Callum Wilson's 16th-minute opener but a Kieran Trippier error led to Mykhailo Mudyrk equalising in stoppage time. Trippier and Matt Ritchie then missed their spot-kicks as the home side progressed.

Howe, taking charge of his 100th game as Newcastle's head coach, named three changes from Saturday's win over Fulham. Emil Krafth, Lewis Miley and Sven Botman were named in the starting XI in place of the injured Fabian Schar & Joelinton. Meanwhile, Dan Burn dropped to the bench.

It was an even start with Anthony Gordon seeing an effort deflected over before Conor Gallagher struck the crossbar. But United broke the deadlock 16 minutes in when mistakes by Levi Colwill and Benoit Badiashile gifted Callum Wilson an early Christmas present on his 100th appearance for the club.

Chelsea responded well and had United pegged in. Raheem Sterling curled a shot inches past the far post. A crucial block on the line from Bruno Guimaraes then denied the former Manchester City man moments later. Armando Broja had the ball in the net but was flagged offside as the visitors held on until half-time.

Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn were introduced at the break as Krafth and Botman departed. Gordon didn't last much longer either with Matt Ritchie coming on.

The Chelsea pressure continued throughout the second-half. Martin Dubravka produced a good low save to deny Sterling and it looked as though Newcastle would see the game out until a Trippier error in the second minute of stoppage time saw substitute Mykhailo Mudryk equalize.

The game went to penalties and the night got worse for Trippier as he struck his spot-kick wide before Ritchie saw his saved by Djordje Petrovic. Here's our Newcastle United player ratings:
