Newcastle United moved up to fifth in the Premier League table with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at St James' Park.
For 75 minutes, the Magpies dominated their visitors and deservedly lead through Anthony Gordon's goal. The minutes after that were nervy but Newcastle held out to record a third straight win over the Red Devils in 1922.
Eddie Howe named an unchanged starting XI for the third match in a row on the back of last Saturday's 4-1 win over Chelsea and the midweek draw in Paris. The Magpies remained without 10 senior players.
The home side dominated the first half with Miguel Almiron twice going close, while Kieran Trippier's free-kick hit the crossbar. Fourteen shots were registered in total but no breakthrough arrived.
But Newcastle finally got the opener they deserved in the 56th minute when Bruno Guimaraes and Trippier linked up with the latter's cross tapped home by Gordon at the back post.
Man United thought they had equalised in the closing stages when Antony's shot hit off Harry Maguire. Thankfully for the Magpies, the England defender was in an offside position and the goal was disallowed.
