Newcastle United player ratings from 1-0 Brighton defeat: 'Rusty' 5/10 & 'wasteful' 6/10

Newcastle United 0-1 Brighton & Hove Albion: Danny Welbeck’s first-half goal is the difference between the two teams at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United suffered their first home defeat since January after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Eddie Howe made two changes from the goalless draw at Everton. Alexander Isak returned from three games out with a broken toe to lead the attack as Harvey Barnes made way. Tino Livramento came in at right-back for the injured Kieran Trippier.

Lewis Miley was back in the matchday squad after seven months out with a back issue and broken metatarsal. Callum Wilson, despite training this week, wasn’t risked as he awaits his first appearance of the campaign.

The Magpies dominated the opening stages but fell behind against the run of play when Danny Welbeck scored for the visitors.

There was a lot of huffing and puffing from Howe’s side, with Isak and Gordon overseeing their best chances. However, they were unable to find a equaliser.

It was the first time Newcastle have failed to score at St James’ Park since the 0-0 draw with Leicester City in May 2023, the night the club qualified for the Champions League.

United also haven’t scored a goal in open play since Harvey Barnes netted at Fulham on September 21.
