Newcastle United progressed into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout win over Crystal Palace. Nick Pope was the hero, saving three spot-kicks.
The England goalkeeper denied Luka Milivojevic, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Malcom Ebiowei to cancel out Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes’ misses. Chris Wood Joelinton, Kieran Trippier converted their penalities.
Eddie Howe named eight changes to his Newcastle starting XI, with Pope, Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff the only remainders from Sunday’s 4-1 win at Southampton. The likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey, Joelinton, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett and Elliot Anderson were also handed starts.
As a result, the Magpies struggled to get into their rhythm and although gradually improved in second-half following the introductions of Trippier, Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron, they could not breach the Palace defence.
And so it went to penalties, with Pope saving Milivojevic, Mateta and Ebiowei’s penalties to send United into the next round. Here’s our writer Jordan Cronin’s player ratings from the shootout victory over Palace:
