Newcastle United player ratings gallery: ‘Off day’ for 6/10 & 7/10 ‘not at his fluent best’ v Bournemouth
Newcastle United player ratings from the 1-0 win over Bournemouth in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle United progressed into the last eight of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win over Premier League counterparts Bournemouth.
Adam Smith’s own goal on 67 minutes decided the closely-fought tie as the Magpies put their name in the hat for the quarter-final draw, which takes place on Thursday evening.
Eddie Howe named a full-strength starting XI to take on Bournemouth, with all five of United’s World Cup stars Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope, Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar in from the off.
Wilson thought he had opened the scoring against his former side when a scramble in the penalty box led to the striker side-footing the ball into the bottom right corner. The visitors protested, however, and the goal was belatedly ruled out for an offside on Joe Willock.
The former Arsenal midfielder didn’t actually touch the ball in the build-up but was deemed to be interfering with play, whilst being on the floor. With no VAR in operation, there was no definitive way of knowing.
United did find their breakthrough midway through the second half as Kieran Trippier’s cross was turned into his own net by Smith.
Here’s our writer Jordan Cronin’s Newcastle player ratings from the win at St James’ Park:

1. Nick Pope - 7
Produced two late saves to deny Jack Stacey and Dominic Solanke from close-range. Was sharp off his line in the opening stages.

2. Kieran Trippier - 7
Hit a free-kick wide on 13 minutes. Put in a couple of dangerous delivers into the area, one that was eventually headed into his own goal by Adam Smith.

3. Fabian Schar - 8
Won the ball high on a few occasions. Always looked to play forward passes. Read the game well. Twice came close to opening the scoring.

4. Sven Botman - 7
Produced a quality bit of defending on 22 minutes to hold off Solanke and calmly clear. A threat from set pieces with a flick on always diverted home by Schar.
