Newcastle United player ratings gallery: ‘Surprise’ 9/10 as 5/10 ‘struggles’ in Al-Hilal win
Newcastle United player ratings from the 5-0 win over Al-Hilal.
Newcastle United recorded a 5-0 win over Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal - with Joelinton and Miguel Almiron both netting braces.
Joelinton opened the scoring and added a second before withdrawing on the hour-mark. Almiron, on at half-time, continued his fine form to make it 4-0.
Magpies under-23s striker Dylan Stephenson addded a fifth in the costing stages to wrap up a comprehensive victory.
Our writer Jordan Cronin is in Riyadh - and here’s his Newcastle United player ratings from the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium:

1. Loris Karius - 9
Made five saves in the first half, including two outstanding stops. Impressive debut, and one that could strengthen his case for a new contract.

2. Javier Manquillo - 7
A comfortable display, barely tested defensively. Much-needed minutes after missing pre-season has resulted in just one start so far.

3. Jamaal Lascelles - 6
Back in as skipper and constantly communicated with his teammates. Vented his frustration at a couple of Al-Hilal chances in the opening 45 minutes.

4. Sven Botman - 6
Intercepted a number of Al-Hilal attacks but was perhaps lucky not to concede a penalty after a clumsy challenge on Perriera. Photo: George Wood
