Newcastle United player ratings gallery: Two 5/10s but one 9/10s in Crystal Palace win
Newcastle United progressed into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout win over Crystal Palace. Nick Pope was the hero, saving three spot-kicks as Chris Wood, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier scored theirs.
The England goalkeeper denied Luka Milivojevic, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Malcom Ebiowei to cancel out Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes’ misses from 12 yards out. United will learn their next round opponent after Manchester United vs Aston Villa on Thursday night.
Eddie Howe named eight changes to his Newcastle starting XI, with Pope, Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff the only remainders from Sunday’s 4-1 win at Southampton. The likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey, Joelinton, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett and Elliot Anderson were also handed starts.
As a result, the Magpies struggled to get into their rhythm and although gradually improved in second-half following the introductions of Trippier, Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron, they could not breach the Palace defence.
And so it went to penalties, with Pope saving Milivojevic, Mateta and Ebiowei’s effortd to send United into the next round. Here’s our writer Jordan Cronin’s player ratings from the shootout victory over Palace at St James’ Park”

1. Nick Pope - 9
The penalty shootout hero after saving three spot-kicks. Was kept quiet in normal time, although produced a top save to deny Mateta early on.

2. Javier Manquillo - 5
Looked like a player lacking match sharpness. Left Lascelles isolated on a few occasions when he pushed forward and was slow to get back.

3. Jamaal Lascelles - 7
A solid display from the Magpies skipper. Coped physically with Mateta and won his headers. Read the game well too.

4. Dan Burn - 6
Was given the run around by Mateta in the first half but could have got on the scoresheet after squandering two second half headers.
