Newcastle United suffered a shock FA Cup third round exit to League One opposition for the second successive season.
Eddie Howe’s side were defeated 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday after a second half brace by Josh Windass.
Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back with 21 minutes remaining but the Magpies were unable to force a replay.
With that, the club’s 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end.
Howe, without Allan Saint-Maximin through illness, made eight changes with the likes of Callum Wilson, Nick Pope and Fabian Schar also left at home.
The standout inclusion was Alexander Isak, who made his first appearance since September after recovering from a thigh problem.
United had chances to take the lead through Alexander Isak, Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy before Windass put Wednesday in front on 52 minutes.
Howe reacted with a triple sub on 61 minutes as Bruno Guimaraes, Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock joined the action. But Windass struck again.
Guimaraes pulled one back on 69 minutes but the Magpies were unable to find a equaliser to force the match to a replay.
