Newcastle United player ratings: ‘Off day’ for Magpies star but midfielder ‘shines’ vs Crystal Palace
Newcastle United player ratings from the stalemate with Crystal Palace at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United were left frustrated by Crystal Palace as the two sides played out a 0-0 draw at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe rotated his centre-back pairing for the visit of Palace with Fabian Schar and Sven Botman replacing Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn.
The Magpies had 14 shots at goal in the first half but couldn’t find a breakthrough after some good saves from Vicente Guaita and last-ditch Palace defending.
United thought they had made their dominance count shortly after half-time following an own goal from Tyrick Mitchell.
However, referee Michael Salisbury, after checking at the VAR monitor, controversially disallowed the goal after Joe Willock collided with Guaita.
Here, our writer Jordan Cronin dishes out his player marks from the stalemate against Palace:

1. Nick Pope - 8
Quick off his line and always looking to get Newcastle on the attack with his quick throw. Brilliant stops to deny Mateta and Edouard.

2. Kieran Trippier - 7
Delivered four or five brilliant crosses into the box during the first-half. A late direct free-kick was fired straight into the wall.

3. Fabian Schar - 7
Mateta had the height advantage on Schar but the Swiss defender won everything. Always looked for the forward pass.

4. Sven Botman - 7
A solid display, although was let-off when he let Edouard through on goal with Pope required to save with his feet.
