Newcastle United’s four-match Premier League unbeaten run came to end following a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The Magpies registered just one shot on target, which didn’t arrive until the 87th minute, and shipped two goals at the other end as Jean Philippe Mateta struck twice in the second-half.
The result saw Eddie Howe’s side drop from sixth to seventh in the table following Manchester United’s 4-2 win over relegation threatened Sheffield United, the side United host at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Howe named an unchanged starting XI from the 4-0 win over Champions League-chasing Tottenham Hotspur, while Callum Wilson returned to the bench following two months out with a pectoral muscle injury.
Similar to the 1-0 win at Fulham earlier this month, the Magpies were perhaps fortunate to head into half-time level as they struggled to get out their own half. Palace registered nine shots at goal compared to United’s one.
The Eagles made their possession count in the 55th minute when a quick one-two between Jordan Ayew and Mateta saw the latter slot the ball past Martin Dubravka. Mateta then added his second in the closing stages.

1. Martin Dubravka - 5
Had to be alert to deny Crystal Palace in the first-half before twice being beaten by Jean-Philippe Mateta.
2. Jacob Murphy - 4
Looked out of place as a right-wing back as he failed to replicate his Spurs performance. Also played a questionable part in Palace’s opener.
3. Emil Krafth - 4
Simply couldn’t contain Eberechi Eze in a rocky defensive display. Didn’t always look comfortable in possession either.
4. Fabian Schar - 5
One of a number of players that weren’t anywhere near their best. Was very slow to react to things. Not his usual self in possession.
