Newcastle United climbed up to fifth in the Premier League table with an emphatic 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe named four changes to his starting XI. Sandro Tonali, who is under investigation for alleged illegal betting, was among those to drop to the bench with Joelinton, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy recalled.
And it was the latter who opened the scoring four minutes in when his cross-cum-shot looped over goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The goal was initially awarded offside but a VAR check showed that Kieran Trippier, who provided the assist, was onside.
Murphy turned provider in the 44th minute when his cross was fired home by Gordon at the back post. Sean Longstaff then added a third moments later when he capitalised on a mistake by Marc Guehi.
United then cruised to victory after the break as Callum Wilson latched onto a ball by Murphy to make it 4-0. Eddie Howe’s side are now eight games unbeaten in all competitions.
