Eddie Howe made five changes from the 4-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds on Wednesday. Lloyd Kelly was handed his debut while Bruno Guimaraes, Miguel Almiron, Fabian Schar and Odysseas Vlachodimos made their first starts of pre-season.
Nick Pope, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy and Emil Krafth dropped to the bench. Joe Willock was left out of the matchday squad as United manage his minutes after returning from a long-term injury.
Guimaraes captained his teammates, who had chances to open the scoring before Yokohama did through Elber in the 34th minute.
Howe made seven subs at half-time with Nick Pope, Harrison Ashby, Emil Krafth, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, Trevan Sanusi and Ben Parkinson replacing Vlachadimos, Tino Livramento, Schar, Kelly, Guimaraes, Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak.
And within five minutes of the second-half, the Magpies were 2-0 down. Murphy tried to the shield the ball out for a goal-kick but was robbed of possession. A low cross was then fired home by Jun Amano.
Due to the changes and extraordinary heat at the Japan National Stadium, Newcastle struggled to create many goalscoring opportunites.
