Newcastle United player ratings: 'Special' & 'integral' 9/10s but 'frustrating' 6/10 in Fulham win

Newcastle United player ratings v Fulham: Lewis Miley stars as Magpies return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Newcastle United ended a run of three straight defeats and returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory against Fulham at St James' Park.

The Magpies came into the game on the back of losses against Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan but made home comforts count as goals from Lewis Miley and Miguel Almiron sealed a vital three points.

This was United's seventh straight home win in the league as they moved back up to sixth in the top-flight table.

Eddie Howe made two changes to his starting XI from Wednesday's Champions League exit to AC Milan with Dan Burn in for the suspended Kieran Trippier. Sean Longstaff replaced Miley in midfield.

Alexander Isak was left out of the matchday squad because of a groin issue and United's injury woes quickly worsened when Fabian Schar and Joelinton were forced to withdraw in the first half.

The pair's withdrawals came either side of Raul Jimenez's 22nd-minute red card for Fulham following a recklessly high challenge on Longstaff. Referee Sam Barrott initially awarded a yellow card but he overturned his decision after a review at the VAR pitchside monitor.

Despite United's man advantage, they struggled to break the visitors down before the break while Fulham posed a threat on the counter-attack.

But Newcastle found a second wind after the break and 17-year-old Miley became the club's youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer when he broke the deadlock on 57 minutes.

And they quickly doubled their advantage as a collision between Callum Wilson and Bernd Leno presented Almiron with an open goal.

Burn then wrapped up the three points with a third when he bundled home Guimaraes' cross in the 82nd miniute.
