Newcastle United player ratings: Two 9/10s as Magpies star puts in ‘career best’ display vs Man City

Newcastle United player ratings from the 3-3 draw with Manchester City at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United earned a well-deserved draw against Premier League champions Manchester City to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Ilkay Gundogan put City in front before goals from Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier put the Magpies in dreamland.

But the visitors were always going to come back into it and found two quick-fire goals through Erling Haaland and Bernado Silva.

It was disappointing for Newcastle who led 3-1 but against the reigning champions, it was a point the home side welcomed.

Eddie Howe named an unchanged starting XI to take on Man City following last weekend’s goalless draw at Brighton.

The Magpies got off to a poor start when Gundogan, left unmarked from a Silva cross, put City in front on five minutes.

But Newcastle responded in terrific fashion with Allan Saint-Maximin, in particular, terrifying the City defence as the hosts surged into the lead.

The Frenchman grabbed both assists with Almiron equalising on 28 minutes. The on-field decision was offside before VAR awarded the goal.

There was no doubt over Wilson’s strike to put United ahead, 11 minutes later as he linked up with Saint-Maximin to poke the ball beyond Ederson.

St James’ Park was in dreamland when Trippier powered a free-kick home on 54 minutes.

But as United found out, Pep Guardiola’s side can change the game in a flash, which they did with two goals in three minutes.

Erling Haaland volleyed home to make it 3-2 before an eye-of-the-needle pass by Kevin De Bruyne played in Silva for 3-3.

Here’s our writer Jordan Cronin’s Newcastle United player ratings from the 3-3 draw.
