Newcastle United player ratings: 'Uncomfortable' 4/10 & two 3s after 8-0 hammering vs A-League All Stars

Newcastle United player ratings from the shocking 8-0 defeat to the A-League All Stars in Melbourne.

Newcastle United youngsters were thrashed by the A-League All Stars, losing 8-0 at the Marvel Stadium.

The Magpies were 3-0 down at half-time with Ben Old, Nicolas Milanovic and Adam Taggart on target. Five more goals followed after the break through Jake Hollman, Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Bozhidar Kraev, while Apostolos Stamatelopoulos grabbed a brace.

Mark Gillespie took his place in between the sticks and captained a team with a combined average of 19. Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall and Elliot Anderson were the only senior options named on the bench with a number players either rested or returning home ahead of their international commitments next month.

But the will come as no consolation to Newcastle who travelled Down Under to boost their reputation and brand. And a hammering like certainly won’t help their case.

Here’s our Newcastle United player ratings:

Mark Gillespie - 5

Gifted a chance to Nicolas Milanovic but immediately redeemed himself with an outstanding save onto both posts. Almost a moment of madness when Mathew Leckie put the ball in the net after he came charging off his line but saved by the offside flag. Could do little about the goals conceded.

Harrison Ashby - 3

Was one of the more senior heads so better was expected. Lacked an end product in the final third when he did get forward.

Ciaran Thompson - 4

Made a good block from close range but was at fault for the third goal moments later after giving the ball straight to Rhyan Grant who set up Adam Taggart. Replaced at half-time.

Alex Murphy - 3

Usually stands out among his young peers but this too was an off-day for the Irishman. Again, given his first-team involvement this campaign, you expect better.

Dylan Charlton - 4

Beaten too easily by Mathew Leckie in the build-up to the opener and failed to deal with Benjamin Garuccio’s cross that directly led to the second goal. But did OK going forward after finding Garang Kuol in a good position.

Jay Turner-Cooke - 4

Couldn’t clear his line as Ben Old capitalised on a weak clearance to open the scoring. Guilty of giving the ball away in key areas. Looked uncomfortable in the number 6 role.

Joe White - 5

Brought some rare composure when in possession but didn’t get on the ball enough.

Travis Hernes - 5

Physically imposing and looked tidy in possession but visibly tired after the break.

Amadou Diallo - 5

Received the ball in some promising position, particularly in the second-half, but lacked any kind of conviction.

Garang Kuol - 5

A lively first-half where he should have found the net from close range, though the offside flag went up. Had his moments but faded significantly after the break.

Ben Parkinson - 5

Barely got a kick in the first-half but improved in the second-half after moving out to the right wing.

Lucas De Bolle (on for Turner-Cooke, 45) - 6

Made things happen in his opening 10 minutes on the pitch after setting away Harrison Ashby and Garang Kuol. Faded.

Ellis Stanton (on for Ciaran Thompson, 45) - 4

Looked steady after coming on but pulled his shirt over his head after giving away possession in the build up to the fourth goal.

Aidan Harris (on for Gillespie, 63) - 4

Conceded to Apostolos Stamatelopoulous twice, Jake Hollman, Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Bozhidar. Kraev. You have to feel sorry for him...
