Newcastle United came from two goals down to claim a point against AFC Bournemouth at St James’ Park.
The Cherries were 2-0 up inside the opening 35 minutes through Marcus Tavernier’s opener and a Malick Thiaw own goal but Harvey Barnes’ wonderful solo strike before half-time gave the Magpies hope heading into the second half.
United’s equaliser arrived in the 88th minute from substitute Jacob Ramsey as they continued their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season.
Newcastle’s starting line-up was unchanged from the 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, but there were three changes to the bench as Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Nick Pope and Tino Livramento came into the matchday squad.
Fernandez-Pardo, signed from Lille for £51million on deadline day, and Livramento came in for Nick Woltemade and Leo Shahar following their respective loan exits this week, while Pope replaced the injured Ewen Jaouen.
Pope was free to leave the club in the summer after dropping to third-choice goalkeeper but an ankle injury for Jaouen in training saw the former England international recalled to the squad for the first time under Matthias Jaissle.
United fell behind in a game the first time under Jaissle after Tavernier put the Cherries in front inside the opening 10 minutes. A misplaced Sven Botman pass then presented Evanilson with an opportunity to immediately double the lead but his shot fortunately sailed over the crossbar.
But Bournemouth did go on to add a second in the 35th minute when Alex Scott’s cross deflected in off Thiaw, going down as an own goal for the Magpies’ skipper.
Out of nothing, Newcastle immediately pulled one back. Barnes cut inside down the left and curled his shot superbly into the top corner. The Magpies, without creating too much, were the better team in the second half and managed to claim a point in the 88th minute through substitute Jacob Ramsey.
