The Magpies failed to sign Palace defender Marc Guehi in the summer, yet it was him that provided what looked to be the winner when he deflected Anthony Gordon’s cross into his own net.
However, Guehi redeemed himself at the death when his delivery to the back post was headed home by Daniel Munoz. In truth, a draw was arguably a fair result with Eddie Howe’s side failing to register a shot at goal.
Howe made two changes from the 2-0 defeat to West Ham United with Dan Burn, back from suspension, selected ahead of Lloyd Kelly. Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali came in for Sean Longstaff.
Just 22 minutes in, the Magpies were dealt a major injury blow when Alexander Isak was forced off with what appeared to be a hip injury. Harvey Barnes replaced the Swede, which saw Anthony Gordon move into the central striker role.
United failed to register a shot at goal in the first-half while Palace squandered two golden chances.
Nick Pope denied Ismaila Sarr from close-range before a counter-attack presented Daniel Munoz with an opportunity at the back post but he missed from six yards out.
Newcastle were able to take the lead without registering a shot as a quick free-kick routine saw Gordon’s pullback deflect home via Guehi. Howe’s men looked like hanging on for three points but Palace found an equaliser in the 94th minute as Munoz headed in.
