Newcastle United crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the last 16 stage after losing 3-1 away to Everton.
Newcastle remained without Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Lewis Miley as Matthias Jaissle made just one change from the 2-0 win at Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
Jacob Ramsey made his first start after seven weeks out with a groin issue, replacing Joelinton in midfield.
Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock and Fabian Schar forced saves from Jordan Pickford but it was the Toffees that got their noses in front through James Garner’s 34th-minute strike.
Amar Dedic needlessly conceded possession to Tyrique George down the right. He found Garner and the midfielder curled his shot into the bottom right corner.
Newcastle then had a penalty appeal turned down when Harvey Barnes was brought down by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. It looked a penalty on the replays, but with no VAR in operation, there was no way of overturning it.
Not long after, Everton went up the other end to double their lead through former Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney.
Newcastle fell 3-0 down when Thierno Barry got on the end of Dewsbury-Hall’s low cross. A late goal for Joelinton then salvaged some pride for the visitors.
