Newcastle United ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Eddie Howe kept faith with the same team that beat West Ham United on Monday night, meaning Nick Pope got the nod ahead of Martin Dubravka in goal.
Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento formed the back four with captain Bruno Guimaraes in midfield alongside Sandro Tonali and Joelinton. In attack, Harvey Barnes lined up on the left and Jacob Murphy on the right with Alexander Isak leading the line.
Fresh from his first England call-up, Burn give Newcastle the lead on the stroke of half-time. The defender headed home Trippier’s corner to become the club’s cup final scorer in 49 years.
The Magpies then doubled their advantage shortly after half-time. Moments after seeing a goal ruled out for offside, Isak found the net again when he directed Murphy’s cross home.
Federico Chiesa pulled one back for Liverpool in stoppage time after a VAR check overruled the initial offside. But it was too little, too late as Newcastle ended their long wait for a trophy.
