Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 defeat at Premier League leaders Liverpool, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister netting in either half.
Eddie Howe’s side were without top scorer Alexander Isak due to a “slight groin issue” which handed Callum Wilson his first Premier League start of the campaign. The other change from Sunday’s 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest saw Sandro Tonali come in for Lewis Miley.
Liverpool opened the scoring just 12 minutes in. Szoboszlai’s shot passed through the legs of Sandro Tonali and Dan Burn, leaving Nick Pope unsighted.
The hosts made it 2-0 on the hour-mark when Mohammed Salah set up Alexis Mac Allister.
The Magpies’ 30-year wait for a win at Anfield goes on, losing 24 and drawing five in that time.
Our writer Jordan Cronin was at Anfield - and here his Newcastle United player ratings:

5. Dan Burn - 6
Saw the ball roll through his legs for the Liverpool opener but was relatively solid after that. Set Callum Wilson in behind with a long pass | AFP via Getty Images

6. Lewis Hall - 7
Dealt well with Mo Salah for an hour but tired - probably more mentally than physically - after the second goal went in. Still, was arguably NUFC’s best performer. | Getty Images

7. Sandro Tonali - 5
Let Szoboszlai go for Liverpool’s opener and misplaced a pass that led to the hosts’ second goal. Was OK in the main but those two moments were costly. | AFP via Getty Images

8. Bruno Guimaraes - 5
Had some tidy moments on the ball but didn’t impact the game as much as you would have liked from a player of his quality. | Getty Images
