A brace from Harvey Barnes and goals from Jacob Murphy and Joelinton saw Newcastle United beat Villarreal 4-0 and win the Sela Cup.
Eddie Howe fielded a different starting XI from the 2-0 win over Fiorentina on Saturday. Nick Pope returned in goal as Jacob Murphy, Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett lined up in a back four. Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton formed the midfield three with Harvey Barnes, Callum Wilson and Matt Ritchie forming the attack.
Murphy opened the scoring just six minutes when Ritchie’s free-kick was cleared to the edge of the box. Murphy took a touch before blasting the ball past the helpless Pepe Reina. Newcastle twice had the ball in the net again through Callum Wilson and Paul Dummett but both were ruled out for offside and a foul, respectively.
The hosts doubled their lead on the hour-mark when Joelinton set up Barnes. The Brazilian then turned goalscorer in the 76th minute when he carried the ball from midfield before aiming the ball into the top right corner.
Three minutes later, Barnes then added his second and United’s fourth after latching onto a cross from Wilson. Here’s our Newcastle United player ratings:
